Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor Explained
OxyFILM is a pure biofilm (fixed film) system which allows for aeration from the carrier side. It exploits a gas permeable hollow fibre membrane which allows the bacteria to ‘breath’ by allowing the oxygen to travel across the non porous wall by way of diffusion. The Membrane Aerated Biofilm Reactor (MABR) habitat creates an ideal environment to support a very resilient biofilm that can withstand hydraulic shock loads and process upsets. The biofilm absorbs and consumes carbon and nitrogen based pollutants, but unlike conventional fixed film/biofilm systems (MBBR, RBC) it is incredibily energy efficient.

1. Easy to Install
OxyMem MABR can easily be installed on site within a short time (hours), and with minimal effort. It can also be installed quickly into a biological process tank on site e.g. it could hang from a wall or suitable structure so that the top of is just above top water level. Once in position, the membrane cartridge is simply connected up to a small air blower and its power is turned on.
2. High Energy Efficiency
Oxygen transfer efficiency per unit of energy is 14kg O2/kWh. 7X more efficient than Conventional Activated Sludge (CAS) and 15X more energy efficient than Moving Bed BioReactor (MBBR). Energy consumption for Industrial applications is typically 0.125 kWh per kg of COD removed. Energy consumption for typical municipal wastewater treatment plant is in the order of 0.1 – 0.2 kWh per m³ of wastewater treated.
3. Low Sludge Production
50% lower sludge production compared to CAS. Biofilm delivers a much lower sludge yield, 0.1-0.15kgTSS/kg COD removed because more of the COD is oxidised to CO2.
OxyFILM is a manufactured module contained within a Stainless Steel where is houses the OxyMem hollow fiber membranes. It contains the fundamental components of process air, scour air systems (for biofilm management) and also comes with an optional air lift system for lowest cost mixing.
